Neil Mackinnon really set the standard for us all to follow at the Shrewsbury Masters Meet and became the first record breaker of the year in Britian!
He aged up an age group into the 75-79 years and bagged a hat-trick of records:
- European record in 50 free 30.69
- British record in the in the 50 fly 35.09
- British record in the 100 IM 1.24.98
Congratulations Neil! A cracking start to the year! Definitely more to come!
NW Regional Meet, Blackpool 2016
As always this meet provides us with all with a way to set a benchmark for the year! Due to the timing of Europeans the distance meet had merged with the sprint meet. It was a very encouraging start to the year for everyone who swam!

The top male swimmer was Neil Mackinnon, Trafford Metro.
The top female in the most improved swimmer category wass Rebecca Henly

Relay Medals
Records
We also had a number of record breaking swimmers.
We had a few swimmers and teams that were tantalisingly close to records too. Neil was only 4 hundreths off the world record in the 50 free. There is definitely more to come!

Three swimmers crossed the border for this competition. They were Judy Brown, Neil MacKinnon, and David Randall. They raced in 15 events between them and came back with 15 top two finishes!
Neil was dominant in the 75 years and over age group and once again in record breaking form breaking his British Record in the 50 fly and missing the European by 14 hundredths!
Times are looking promising for all of these 3 when they race in London in a couple of weeks time.
European Masters Aquatic Championships, London 24th-29th May
We had 12 swimmers and 2 synchronised swimmers make the journey down to the London Aquatics Centre for the ‘much anticipated’ Masters European Championships!
Our swimmers were:
Paul Barnard, Judy Brown, Laura Bowden, Alec Johnson, Dan Korsc, Lucy Lloyd-Roach, Neil Mackinnon, Jane McCormick, Rachel O’Gorman, David Randall, Simon Rigby, Helen Sadler
Annabelle Julia Surch-Williams and Jill Lawson were our representatives in the synchcro. With Annabelle and Jill in the duet and Annabelle in the solo.
Despite a challenging and unusual set of racing conditions that are unlikely to be replicated again, we came away with our most succesful European Championhship to date. Out of the 31 events we competed in, we came away with 22 top 20 finishes. It should be noted that this might have been more as swimmers were only allowed to compete in 3 individuals; for our longer distance specialists, there was no 400 IM or 1500 free and from a relay perspective, there weren't the longer relays that we enjoy our successes in.
Neil and Paul both lowered their own records that they had set in April. Neil knocked a second off his European record in the 50 fly to lower his record to 33.74 and Paul was 0.4 off 1st in the 200 free, he swam a 1:59.92, slashing over 2 seconds from British Record to go sub two minutes (long course) for the first time.
Jane McCormick deserves a special mention as she finished just outside of the top 20. She came 21st in the 800 free and that is whilst swimming for 2 as she was 7 months pregnant at the time of racing!
Great week in London; well done everyone!

Special mention must go to Euan Henderson who comfortably broke 30 for the first time on his 50 free!
Rounded off with the traditional team curry afterwards!
